Joining NPT ‘voluntarily,’ IAEA must observe JCPOA ‘fairly’

TEHRAN, Sep. 20 (MNA) – President Rouhani in a Sun. meeting with the IAEA chief said Iran has voluntarily signed up to NPT and expects the IAEA to oversee the implementation of the JCPOA fairly.

“We are keen on seeing the world’s general opinion to put its trust in the International Atomic Energy Agency because this trust will bring peace of mind to the people in the world,” Iranian President Hassan Rouhani said on Sunday in a meeting with the visiting IAEA Director General Yukiya Amano in Tehran.

Describing the Agency’s responsibilities in technical, legal and political domains as 'important' and 'complex,' the Iranian President added “the IAEA, on the one hand, oversees the nuclear activities of countries so that they will not deviate from their peaceful programs, and on the other hand endeavours to have other countries enjoy advanced, peaceful technologies in the nuclear field. We hope that the agency, as part of its responsibilities, will increase its efforts in the coming months to assist with the scientific progress of countries including Iran.”

President Rouhani highlighted that the Islamic Republic of Iran due to its religious beliefs and deterrence doctrine has never sought to procure any weapons of mass destruction and will never do so, adding “fortunately, the peaceful nature of Iran’s nuclear program has been proved during the past years through the IAEA’s unexpected inspections and the agency has affirmed that Iran has never deviated from its peaceful nuclear program.”

Rouhani then expressed his appreciation to all countries of the 5+1 for making every effort to bring the nuclear negotiations to a historic agreement, asserting that the IAEA will have a more effective role in the implementation of the accord.

The IAEA chief, for his part, expressed his satisfaction with the development of cooperation between Iran and the agency following the nuclear agreement and the signing of the Roadmap in his previous visit with Rouhani, saying “the agency seeks to clarify issues and perform its duties which can serve as a good basis for long-term cooperation.”

He added that the IAEA experts will present their reports on PMD (Possible Military Dimensions) to the Board of Governors as soon as possible after gaining the confirmation of the negotiating countries.

“The IAEA has implemented a forward, systematic step-by-step plan in investigating Iranian-related programs and makes every effort to neutrally reflect the facts in its reports,” said Amano.

Director General of the International Atomic Energy Agency (IAEA ) Yukiya Amano arrived in the Iranian capital of Tehran on Sunday morning to discuss issues related to the country’s peaceful nuclear program.

Amano also attended a hearing session of the Parliament Special Commission on JCPOA in the afternoon to inform Iranian MPs on the IAEA’s performance, inspections and vital responsibilities.

Amano also held a meeting with Iranian Foreign Minister Mohammad Javad Zarif on Sunday.
